Kootenai Lake 2011

Our Forest Murrain

Late last fall foresters did a whole bunch of selective tree harvesting along our usual morning walk.  They left bare a lot or large granite boulders.  This one looked like a giant cannon ball and was high above our walk.  Each day, afterwards, we would walk by quickly expecting a ton of rock to make our day.

So one day when we were marking our property line to warn off hunters, we thought of marking that rock.  Climbing up, we found that it was huge and deeply buried.  Even so, we put a smile on it.

Ever since it has welcomed us on our walk.  With a chuckle it told us it was a forest murrain.  And the name has stuck.

Grizzly Prints

Sandra's hand next to a rear footprint of a Grizzly.    A front print is lower to the right.   We saw the bear.  Early spring bears can be kind of growly, so we kept our distance.
